Farm Logbook - Next step: planting
The sowing is now complete for this year's seed production. We did all of them at home and then grew them at a horticulturalist's in the valley, taking advantage of their infrastructure, which is better suited to growing young plants. Only the lettuce was sown at the Lycée de Pouillé by a teacher and his students. Idrissa, who works on the team, is doing his apprenticeship there and managed the project. Unfortunately, the current heat, combined with a lack of light, particularly due to this cloud coming from the Sahara, caused the plants to quickly wither, so a new sowing will be done quickly. In the tunnels, the soil improvers are now buried, which will provide the soil with maximum nutrients. We will wait 2 to 3 weeks before mixing the soil again, then we will be able to plant the new seed crops. The radish crops are growing despite attacks from pollen beetles on the flowers. This is a beetle that is a pest of rapeseed and other brassicas. Unfortunately, it is impossible to put up an insect-proof net to protect against it because the plants are too large. We have to go through the rows 2 to 3 times a day with sticky strips to try to fight against it...
