The cultures

In this freezing weather and below-zero temperatures, the production team covered the cabbage, radish and carrot crops with a winter fleece.

Leeks, on the other hand, are quite resistant to this weather and don't need protection during the winter. The crops you see above are Saint-Victor leeks, known for being among the tastiest leeks. But don't worry if you see them turning slightly purple (as in the photo on the right), this is normal; it's specific to this variety.

Under this tunnel grows a mixture of soil improvers to prevent the soil from being left bare during the winter and also to improve the quality of the soil. Some sown varieties have taproots that help loosen the soil, while others produce biomass and nourish the soil.

The sorting stage

Most of the crops are harvested and the seeds dried; now it's time for sorting. Currently, the team is sorting sunflower seeds (pictured above), carrot seeds (on the machine opposite), and tansy seeds (in the hand below). Incidentally, tansy, in liquid form, is known to control insect pests.

The life of the production team

That's not all! Meanwhile, the potato onions have been packaged ready for shipping, and the team is starting to think about planting new varieties in the tunnels for the coming season.

Speaking of the upcoming season, we are preparing the seedlings for the next few days: eggplants, chilies and peppers will be the first varieties to be sown.

We are also thinking about new varieties that we could grow on our land.

What's more, every year we conduct germination tests on our seeds to assess their quality. If the germination rate isn't sufficient, we won't be able to keep or sell them, so we'll have to re-cultivate and reproduce them.

Julien's Garden

It's a quiet time in the vegetable garden. A few leeks, chicories, and carrots are still being harvested to be sold in the store.

Julien and Idrissa cut miscanthus (grasses) to mulch the mounds and thus protect them from erosion (frost, cold). As it decomposes, the miscanthus will add organic matter to the soil.
