Basella rubra
Fast-growing climbing plant adapted to warm climates, annual in our climate. The leaves are eaten raw, lightly cooked, sautéed, or made into an infusion. The fruits are used as a coloring in pastries. It thrives in full sun, warm, humid locations in rich, well-drained soil. A minimum temperature of 15°C is necessary for its growth. Can reach 4 to 6 meters. Water daily in case of extreme heat or drought.
Sowing
Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Sow in pots in March-April, and keep warm for 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting in mid-May.
Harvest
From June-July, leaves and young shoots are harvested as needed.
