Mergoscia corn is a variety native to Ticino, Switzerland. The ears are compact and bear golden-yellow kernels. Each plant produces an average of two ears. This species is used for making polenta. Easy to maintain, corn will nevertheless require a lot of water during dry periods.

Successful corn sowing

Sow from April to early June, in a sunny, sheltered location, 3 to 4 seeds per seedling, 40 cm apart, in rows 70 cm apart. Leave only the best-looking plant, hill up the plants when they reach 15 to 20 cm in height.

Tip: Pair corn and beans! Many gardeners are smart about growing their beans on corn plants. Corn grows tall, straight, and is firmly anchored in the soil. Pole beans, as well as pickles and cucumbers, will find it a faithful ally for growing smoothly toward the tops. Sorghum, which requires less water, can also serve this purpose as a "living stake."
