SNAKE BEAN OR GREEN ASPARAGUS PEA
Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis
Chinese variety, early, vigorous and productive, produces green pods about 50 cm long. Climbing, provide support with canes.
Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis. The common bean, or kilometer bean, is grown primarily in southwest Asia for its immature pods, which are 30 to 90 cm long. Its flavor is a blend of bean and asparagus; it can be eaten like snap beans. The common bean thrives in the heat; it needs a sufficiently long and warm summer to bear fruit. In mainland France, it is recommended to grow it indoors.
Suitable temperature: 20 - 30°C. Direct sowing in May and June, 3 to 5 seeds per hole spaced 25 cm apart, 65 cm between rows.
Sowing: May-June, harvest: mid-August to mid-October.
Regular watering.
Climbing varieties can easily reach 3 meters in height under cover. Provide stakes in teepees, rowing nets, or simply sow them along a fence.
