Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis. The common bean, or kilometer bean, is grown primarily in southwest Asia for its immature pods, which are 30 to 90 cm long. Its flavor is a blend of bean and asparagus; it can be eaten like snap beans. The common bean thrives in the heat; it needs a sufficiently long and warm summer to bear fruit. In mainland France, it is recommended to grow it indoors.

Suitable temperature: 20 - 30°C. Direct sowing in May and June, 3 to 5 seeds per hole spaced 25 cm apart, 65 cm between rows.

Sowing: May-June, harvest: mid-August to mid-October.

Regular watering.

Climbing varieties can easily reach 3 meters in height under cover. Provide stakes in teepees, rowing nets, or simply sow them along a fence.
