BLACK TORTILLA CORN AB
Zea mays
A vigorous-growing variety that produces thin, long ears of black grain. It is suitable for grinding into flour for making tortillas or mixed with a third of yellow corn to make pink polenta.
Sowing: from April to early June, in a sunny, sheltered location, 3 to 4 seeds per seed pocket, 40 cm apart, in rows 70 cm apart. Leave only the best-looking plant, hill up the plants when they reach 15 to 20 cm in height.
Tip: Pair corn and beans! Many gardeners are smart about growing their beans on corn plants. Corn grows tall, straight, and is firmly anchored in the soil. Pole beans, as well as pickles and cucumbers, will find it a faithful ally for growing smoothly toward the tops. Sorghum, which requires less water, can also serve this purpose as a "living stake."
