Citrullus lanatus
The Bagnacavallo watermelon is a magnificent old variety with pink flesh and a delicate flavor and reversed colors, the skin is light and the stripes are dark.
The seeds are large and creamy white when ripe. The average fruit weight ranges from 8 to 14 kg.
The Bagnacavallo watermelon was a very common variety a few decades ago, saved in Canada by immigrants from Romagna. Breeding work carried out by an Italian seed company and the Cesena Vegetable Production Research Centre has allowed the characteristics and purity of this ancient variety to be rediscovered. Listed on the "d" list, it is now once again produced and sold in some Italian markets.
The fruits of the Bagnacavallo watermelon ripen in mid-July when forced and in August in the open field.
