In 1890 in Albiez-le-Vieux, a small village in Maurienne, in the heart of the French Alps, in Savoie, Joseph Opinel worked in his father's workshop and invented the pocket knife that today bears his name. His knives quickly became a great success and in 1901 Joseph set up his first business next to the family workshop. In 1915 the company moved to Chambéry (Cognin). This was the start of a great adventure! Opinel remains a company run by the descendants of Joseph Opinel, still based in Chambéry, it now employs around a hundred people. Concerned about its environment, the company has committed to a production approach that respects natural resources.
